Department

Aerospace Engineering

The department was set up in 1965 leading to B.Tech (Hons.) degree after a high power committee appointed by GOI stressed the need for manpower training in the field of Aeronautical Engineering. Over the years, the department has built up laboratories in the areas of Aerodynamics, Structures, Propulsion, System & Controls, Aeromodelling etc. A Centre of Excellence for Composite Structures Technology and CFD from 1999, 1988 respectively, funded by ARDB, has been established in 1999. Currently, the research efforts of the faculty are supported by a large number of projects sponsored by ARDB, ADA, ISRO, DST, AICTE, MHRD and many other organisations.

About 70 to 80% students of aerospace engineering in Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur are placed in the placement. Average salary of aerospace engineering students is about 7 lakh per annum. Highest salary of aerospace engineering students is about 10 lakh per annum.

Agriculture and Food Engineering

The department, the first of its kind in the country was set up in 1952 on the recommendation of the Dhar Committee appointed by the Board of Governors. As one of the larger departments of IIT Kharagpur, it covers a wide range of areas dealing with Post-Harvest Technology, Dairy and Food Engineering, Farm Machinery and Power Workshop, Aqua-Cultural Engineering. Sponsored research projects and development activities deal with Integrated Rainwater Management, Soil Tillage, Utilisation of Fly ash, Ergonomic Database for Agricultural Equipment, Integrating Remote Sensing Data with Distributed Hydrological Models, Model Pilot Plant for producing industrial enzymes etc. The department has filed several patent application based on its developmental work.

Architecture and Regional Planning

One of the pioneering Architecture Departments in India, the Department of Architecture, IIT Kharagpur, was conceived for ensuring a holistic integration of the development of science and technology with the normative and cultural dimensions of human society. The first of its kind in the IIT system, the department started its journey in 1952 with the undergraduate course in architecture. In 1959, the first postgraduate course in planning was introduced by the Department, and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1970.

Bioscience

The School of Bio Science (BS) has been established to facilitate cutting-edge research and education in the fields of biological and biomedical sciences.

This school builds on the strong tradition of interdisciplinary research in IIT Kharagpur. Our multi-disciplinary approach will ensure diverse areas of research that include studies at the level of molecules (biochemistry, biophysics, molecular & structural biology) to organisms (cellular and developmental biology, epigenetics, microbiology and immunology).

A major focus of our research is the discovery of therapeutic strategies for various human diseases based on our fundamental molecular and cellular biology research. We will study many important diseases including, but not limited to, tumor & cancer, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, heart and respiratory diseases, diabetes and tuberculosis.

Biotechnology

Our Department started (in 1986) the earliest set of M. Tech. programs in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering in the country and received support from DBT, Government of India, since then. We initiated (in 1994) the B. Tech in Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering, 1st in IIT system. The curriculum served as the model for the other programs in Biotechnology, added later in the country. The academic and research activities have been revised/re-structured this year, targeting intellectual excitements in students and innovative thrust of research students and Faculty. Befitting with the interdisciplinary dimension of the program the students are guided to choose electives across the departments and opt for project work in collaboration with the Faculty in sister Departments. Industry-institute participation in R&D is accorded highest priority, and has resulted in transferring technologies, in the country/abroad. The future goals are set in establishing world class resources and in making outstanding contributions in healthcare biotechnology and bioenergy.

Based on the past records, it's evident that those who have maintained their academic CGPA above 7.5 in any of the disciplines and participated in various extracurricular activities at IIT Kharagpur, almost 98% students have been successful in getting the placement of their choice. These recruiters offer the average salary in the range of 9.00-12.00 Lakhs per annum.

Business Management

Vinod Gupta school of Management, IIT Kharagpur is a public business school located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. An academic unit of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, it is the first business school to be established in an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The institute primarily offers a two-year full-time residential Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme, a 3 years post graduate MBA degree(EMBA) course for working executives and an advanced programme in management leading to the award of a Ph.D. degree.

Chemical Engineering

The department was established in 1951. The first post-graduate degree course with specialisation in Combustion Engineering and Fuel Economy was started in 1952 under the leadership of Professor Weissweller. At present, the department is deeply involved in activities in the field of Pollution Control, Transport Processes, Coal and Petroleum Technology, and Membrane Processes.

Placements: Almost 90% of the total batch strength got placed on the campus. The highest salary package offered is 60 LPA, the lowest salary package offered is 6 LPA, and the average salary package offered is 14.8 LPA.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry in IIT Kharagpur, the brainchild of Sir Jnan Chandra Ghosh, a pioneering Experimental Chemist and the first Director of the Institute, was started in 1951. The department hosts about 32 faculty members engaged in frontier research embracing both basic and applied areas of chemistry. About 170 young research scholars are currently pursuing their doctoral studies in the department. The department offers Integrated MSc (through IIT JEE) and Joint MSc PhD (through JAM) programs.

Equipped with state-of-the art experimental and computational facilities, the department is engaged in several national and international collaborations with different academic and research institutions as well as industries. On the occasion of the International year of Chemistry (2011) the department was recognized as one of the six best Chemistry departments of the nation by the Department of Science and Technology, India.

Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering department is one of the oldest Departments in the Institute with its beginning in 1951. The department has been involved in areas of Soil Mechanics, Transportation Engineering, Hydraulics and Structures and Environmental engineering. Sponsored and consultancy projects undertaken by the department include Disaster Mitigation & Management, Analysis, Evaluation and Design of Highway and Airport pavements, Non-destructive Evaluation and Restoration of various structures such as building and bridges, Process Modifications for pollution mitigation, Ground Improvement and Sediment Transport and Scour studies

Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering was established in 1980. Every year, the Department admits about 60 BTech students, 60 Dual Degree students, and 70 MTech students. Currently there are 40 faculty members, 14 staff members, 108 PhD students and 38 MS students.

The department has a thriving research environment with active research groups in the areas of Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Complex and Social Networks, Machine Learning, Data and Web Mining, Natural Language Processing, Formal Methods, Cryptography and Network Security, Software Engineering, and Systems and Networking.We have a vibrant body of research students. Our students have been very successful and have won many accolades in the recent past. Many of them have obtained prestigious external fellowships, various best paper and best thesis awards. The Department is engaged in many significant research projects sponsored by the government and industry engaged in high end research and development activities.

Graduates from the department at all levels secure excellent placements. A large number of our Alumni have made their mark in different careers. Many of them occupy top positions in both academia and industry all over the world, and quite a number of them have founded successful enterprises.

Computational and Data Sciences

The Centre for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS) at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has been established in March, 2017 with a mandate to promote next generation interdisciplinary research and teaching activities that involve state-of-the-art high performance computing (HPC) platforms.

Cryogenic

Cryogenic Engineering Centre came into being in 1976 on the recommendation of Nayudumma Committee for the advancement of cryogenics and cryogenic engineering. This is a multi disciplinary unit comprising of Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.

It was established to generate expert manpower in this niche area of science and technology through teaching and research. The Centre conducts doctoral programs besides offering M.Tech. and M.S. courses in Cryogenic Engineering. Itoffers several electives related to cryogenics at the B.Tech. level. The Centre conducts continuing educational programs at the national and international level for industry professional, other college teachers and students.

Economics

The Department came into existence with the very inception of IIT Kharagpur in 1951. Its objective was to provide value-based liberal education to budding scientists and engineers so that they can become professionals with a difference to understand the social realities. With the passage of time, the role of the Department has widened quite significantly. Currently, the Department houses many disciplines such as English Language & Literature, Communication Studies, Economics, German, Philosophy, Psychology, Human Resource Management, History, Sanskrit and Sociology.

The Department is actively engaged in teaching, research, training, and outreach activities. It runs two major programs; one at undergraduate level, 5 yr. integrated M Sc in Economics and another at postgraduate level, Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM). The Department takes up projects and consultancies from public and private agencies to address the challenges they face and provides solutions. In keeping with its multidisciplinary character, it carries out research in diverse and emerging areas of human interest and social concern.

Electronics and Electrical Communication Engg.

Headed by Professor H. Tischner , the initial framework of the department was formed under a collaborative programme with the University of Illinois, USA, through TCM involving exchange of faculty members. In course of time, R&D projects have been sponsored by ISRO, Defence departments, DST, and also by international agencies like Nortel Technology (Canada), EU, Texas Instruments, Hughes, Intel, Cadence and many more.

The department has been involved in teaching and research in diverse aspects of Telecommunication, Microelectronics, Computer Vision, Electromagnetics, Light wave Engineering. Some of the recent sponsored projects undertaken by the department include development of silicon micro sensors using MEMS technology for MHRD, Govt of India, development of CORDIC chips and demonstration of its application in Doppler Ultra Sonography for DOE, Analysis Design and development of GTEM cell for ISRO Bangalore, Advanced Wavelength routed optical networks for European Union, Brussels, development of Video Codec using Wavelet Transform technique for Intel, USA., development of array antennas sponsored by DRDO.


Placements: Almost every student of ECE B. Tech got placed. Still, some students got nothing, but they usually go for higher studies. The highest salary package offered is nearly 90 LPA, the lowest salary package offered is 8 LPA and the average salary package offered is nearly 17 LPA.

Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the first three engineering departments of the institute that started in 1951. The Department is running the B.Tech.(Hons.) program in Electrical Engineering since its inception. Later, B.Tech.(Hons.) in Instrumentation Engineering was introduced in 1982. Post graduate studies and research started at the very beginning in 1955 with the first M.Tech. program on Electrical Machines which was later restructured into a program on Machine Drives and Power Electronics.

Subsequently, M.Tech. programs on Control System Engineering (in 1959), Power System Engineering (in 1965), and Instrumentation Engineering (in 1972) had been introduced. A dual degree program, B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering and M.Tech. in Instrumentation Engineering, started in 2002. This program was expanded to include M.Tech. in all the four disciplines subsequently. The department also runs one of the oldest and thriving Doctoral program in Electrical Engineering in the country.


Placements: The average package for Electrical Engineering at IIT, Kharagpur is 15.25 LPA and 12 LPA for dual degree students.

Energy Science and Engineering

School of Energy Science & Engineering (SESE) was started in 2013 as an inter-disciplinary program at IIT-Kharagpur. This School provides critical research inputs in all aspects of energy sectors as well as innovative technologies for energy systems.

SESE also provides research leadership at the national and international level by offering an interdisciplinary research forum and academic program for the study of energy systems, which emphasize on technology demonstration and collaboration. This School has initiated Ph. D. programs in Energy Science and Engineering (from Autumn 2014-15) and a two-year M. Tech. program in Energy Science and Engineering ( from Autumn 2015-16).

Environmental Science and Engineering

The School environmental science and Engineering (SESE) reaches across ancient disciplinary boundaries in its aim to supply a comprehensive understanding of our advanced surroundings and provide economical and effective engineering solutions to environmental issues.

This school focuses on ecological renewal and pollution control be it water, soil and air. Water and waste water management, solid and hazardous waste management, including radioactive, biological waste management and environmental nanotechnology. Among the macro-level problems, the school is considering to focus on improvement of efficiency of the water-supply chain, total urban water use and waste water management, recycling, reuse and pricing policy, studies on an entire river basin and the design of an optimal strategy for its management.

Geology and Geophysics

Starting in 1952, the department expanded to allied areas of applied geology, and exploration geophysics. The department recorded commanding achievements through collaborative work with various organisations like ONGC, GSI, OIL, UCIL, DAE etc.The sponsored projects undertaken by the department include crustal evolution and geochronology of Singbhum, central, Rajasthan and southern Indian cratons, experimental petrology, gold and uranium mineralisation, mineral magnetics, Himalayan orogeny and sedimentation, stable isotopes in Phanerozoic climate change, evolution of Ganges delta, hydrology of Bengal basin and coastal aquifers, seismic tomography and deep crustal structure, seismic hazard and microzonation, near surface geophysics, archaeology of eastern India and Indus valley civilisation, planetary investigation of meteorites and mars, and consultancy projects in ground water assessment, river chemistry, seismic hazard and mining geology.

Placements: Placement depends on the oil and gas industry. Almost 20% of the students got placed in core industry. Average salary package offered was 8 LPA.



Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM)


Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) is the flagship postgraduate course of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, offered in academic association with Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) and Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSoIPL). Born as an M. Tech course in HR in 1982, MHRM has since then undergone meticulous and continuous revision to keep up with the ever-evolving demands of the corporate world and HR management, and in 2010 was rebranded as Master of Human Resource Management (2-year program)

Industrial and Systems Engineering

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) was established in 1973 as Industrial Management Centre and later elevated to a full-fledged department in the year 1983.

The department offers (i) B.Tech (4-year) in Industrial Engineering, (ii) Dual Degree (5-year) - B.Tech. in Industrial Engineering and M.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management, (iii) Dual Degree (5-year) - B.Tech in Mfg. Science & Engg. and M.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Mangement, (iv) M.Tech (2-year) in Industrial Engineering and Management, (v) Master of Science (MS) and (vi) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. In addition, ISE coordinates the Dual Degree (5-year) programme on Quality Engineering Design and Manufacturing with mechanical and industrial electronics verticals. At present (2016-17), the department has 280 UG (BTech+DD), 38 MTech, 4 MS and 40 PhD students.

The department is well known across the world for its excellent research in the fields of Data Analytics, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Quality Engineering and Process Transformations, Information Systems and E-Business, System Thinking and Policy Planning, Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics, Safety Analytics and Virtual Reality, and Healthcare Systems. The department has world class laboratories in the above areas of research and teaching.

Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, the first of its kind in the IIT system was set up in 2006. The basis of the School is to cater to the need for lawyers with technical expertise. We see ourselves as a part of the global endeavor to integrate technology and law to build technical lawyers with expertise to deal with the legal issues in the interface of technology and law. As such we are the only Law School with a technology focus.The School offers three programs; LL.B with specialization in IP Rights, LL.M and Doctoral Program in Law. The global perspective is captured well in the academic program in which we offer diverse set of courses. A comparative study of law from different jurisdictions is also an important feature of many of our courses. The LL.B program of the School is affiliated with Bar Council of India.

Our faculty are a vibrant group drawn from different disciplines of law. They also teach across different IIT departments, conduct various international, governmental as well as sponsored industrial research projects. Our faculty have several international publications. They have won several awards and are members of national as well as international bodies. The School invites several guest faculty, adjunct faculty, industry experts to build practical exposure to students in different areas of law.Workshops, Clinical legal courses, Court room exercises provide the students in-house training in practical aspects. A wide range of electives and breadth subjects offered provide students greater insights into different areas. Our students have won awards at moot court competitions, seminars and conferences.

Materials Science Centre

The Centre was established in 1971 to undertake research activities in the areas of glass and ceramics, polymers, semiconductor, allied materials and composites. The development of know-how and manufacturing technologies of many strategic and advanced materials like Opto-electronic Materials and Devices, Semiconductor Lasers, Polymer Blends etc were taken up by the centre.

With state-of-the-art infrastructure the centre conducts major sponsored research projects and has developed a range of products today and applications, including Ferromagnetic insulator cermets for Telecom Equipment, Alumina composites, Drag Resistant Polymers for Sprinkler Irrigation Systems, Ceramic Components by Gel Casting, Synthesis of Nano sized Nonoxide Ceramic Powders.

Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics has started in 1951 through the vision and untiring efforts of late Prof. B. R. Seth, the first head of the Department. With his dynamic leadership, a strong school of Continuum Mechanics came into existence. In fact, this school has become a pool to cater experts to various other new institutes that have come up consequently. In 1956, Prof. B. R. Seth took initiation to establish Indian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ISTAM), one of the main forums where scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians could interact and exchange ideas, has now achieved international recognition.

Mathematics and Computing

the department has attracted faculty with diversified expertise, for example, Statistics and Quality Control, Operations Research, Reliability, Interval Analysis, Algebra, Biomechanics, Complex analysis, Functional analysis, Optimization, and Data Base Management systems. The department’s vision to cater to the demand from software industry resulted to start a M.Tech. programme in Computer Science and Data Processing (CSDP) and a 5-Year integrated M.Sc. programme in Mathematics and Computing. These two programmes are first of their kind in the country and witnessed integration of Mathematics with Theoretical Computer Science.

Mechanical Engineering

The department, right from the inception in 1951 has been offering undergraduate and advanced studies under the three broad fields of applied mechanics and engineering design, thermal sciences and energy systems, and manufacturing processes and systems.

The current areas include Bond graph and Computer Aided Design techniques, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Flexible Manufacturing Systems and Robotics, Intelligent Machines and Systems, Solid Modelling and Computer Graphics, Application of Neural Networks, Systems Dynamic Simulation, Precision Engineering Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems, Combustion Modelling and Jet Impingement Heat Transfer. The sponsored projects include developing Monodispersable Aerosols, Building Automation, Machining of Advanced Materials, Environmental Friendly Grinding of Titanium Alloys using Cryogenic Cooling, Development of Industrial Robots, Laser Material Processing Technology, Noise and Vibration Control, Condition Monitoring.

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

The Department had its inception in 1954. Over the years, the Department has developed excellent expertise in the areas of Extractive and Physical Metallurgy, Manufacturing Processes, Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Nano-Science and Technology, Modelling and Simulation, Surface Engineering, Powder Metallurgy and Environmental Degradation of Materials.

Mining Engineering

The Department of Mining Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology was started in 1956, with the approval of the Planning Commission and the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The first batch of twenty B. Tech students graduated in 1961 and currently the sanctioned strength of the undergraduate program is 78 B. Tech students.The department has introduced a modern Mining Engineering curriculum in India, taking full advantage of the well-developed infrastructure for technical education at the institute. Over the years, the department has pioneered the offering of courses such as rock and geo-mechanics, mineral processing, numerical methods, geostatistics, GIS & remote sensing, GPS, reliability and quality engineering, safety engineering, environmental science and technology, industrial management, operations research, computer programming and network applications.

Facilities for research have been created over the years in the areas of fire and explosions, subsurface aerodynamics, experimental geomechanics, environmental quality assessment, mineral processing and numerical modeling. The tradition of inter-departmental research cooperation at IIT, Kharagpur significantly enriches the M. Tech. and Ph.D. programs of the department. This department has awarded more doctoral degrees in mining engineering than any other Institution in India. Quality facilities exist for computer-based investigations, and the students have access to a wide variety of engineering software, testing facilities, and analytical equipment available throughout the institute.

Nano Science and Technology


About forty faculty members across 12 different Departments / Centres are associated with the newly created School of Nano-Science and Technology (SNST). The faculty members are involved in the research activities of (a) Nanofabrication / Nanoelectronic & Photonic Devices / NEMS / Nanosensors; (b) Bulk nanostructured materials for structural applications, (c) Novel nanomaterials : Synthesis, self-assembly and applications; (d) Nanostructured coatings for energy conversion/storage and surface engineering, (e) Nano-biotechnology, (f) Computational nanostructures etc. The school has recently established two new facilities, viz. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of nanopowders for fabrication of compacts and electron Beam Lithography (EBL) System for fabricating Nanoelectronic devices. In addition, the existing facilities in different laboratories of the institute are currently being utilized by the faculty members for the research in the broad area of nanomaterials and devices. The school currently has nine enrolled Ph.D. students and offers an elective subject on "Introduction to Nano-Science and Technology".

School of Medical Science and Technology

In the year of its Golden Jubilee in 2001, the School of Medical Science &Technology (SMST) was started at IIT Kharagpur with the objective to provide a platform of interdisciplinary teaching and research in diverse areas of medical science and technology.

The School has collaboration with some of the best medical research institutes and medical industries from all over the world. The School introduced an interdisciplinary 3 years Masters Program in Medical Science and Technology (MMST) - first of its kind in the country. Admission to the MMST program is granted to MBBS doctors each year on the basis of the performance in an entrance test conducted all over the country. The MMST program offered by the School is the only comprehensive physician-scientist training program in India which aims to bridge the gap that has historically separated biological sciences from engineering and physical sciences. The school also offers a 4 semester M.Tech program in Medical Imaging & Informatics. SMST also offers PhD programs.

Ocean Engg and Naval Architecture

Being the first of its kind in the country, the department was established in 1952. during the last 60 years of its existence, the department has made significant contributions to the development of shipbuilding and shipping industries in the country including the Indian Navy, Indian Coastal Guard, DRDO and other allied organisations. The department and its alumni have important and strategic links with universities round the world and major shipyard and dock organizations in our country. In addition to teaching and training at the various levels of bachelors, masters and doctoral programs, the Department is also actively involved in various research and industrial projects sponsored by government, research organizations and industry.

Centre for Oceans, Rivers, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL)


The centre for Oceans, Rivers, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL) at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was established in March, 2005 for imparting quality teaching and advanced training in Earth System Science and Technology. The centre is offering a two-year Postgraduate Program i.e. Master of Technology (M. Tech.) in Earth System Science and Technology/MS/PhD programmes.

The M. Tech in Earth System Science and Technology by CORAL coincides with the establishment of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) by the Government of India. The centre is involved in frontier research in atmospheric observations, oceanography, land system studies observationsand modelling. In atmospheric research, the focus is on the observations and modelling of trace gases, atmospheric pollution and severe thunderstorms. We do research in mesoscale simulations of extreme weather events viz., tropical cyclone, heavy rainfall, flash floods, etc. The centre is conducting research in data assimilation and micro-physical processes, urban boundary layer, regional climate, atmospheric chemistry and environmental impact assessment.

In oceanography, the current research activities include numerical modelling of Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean, wave modelling and ocean circulation. Space based measurements, retrievals, validation and assimilation of geophysical parameters of ocean, atmosphere and land specifically specis biodiversity and carbon sequestration are the other areas of research at the centre. In view of India's active research in Antarctica, the centre is focusing on the remote sensing of sea-ice and southern ocean in relation to climate studies too. The centre is having a Computing and Visualization Laboratory for integration of numerical models and visualization of model results and analyses. The centre is actively involved in various sponsored research progammes (funding from INCOIS, MoES, IFS, SAC etc.) and part of Centre of Excellence in Climate Change funded by Department of Science & Technoogy, Govt of India, New Delhi.

Physics

Established in 1951, the department has a long standing history of excellence in teaching and research. The department currently offers various academic programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The academic programs include the five year integrated M. Sc. through IIT-JEE, the integrated M.Sc - Ph.D, M. Tech.(Solid State Tech.), Ph. D. and a minor in Physics for students majoring in other subjects.

In addition, the department offers basic and topical courses for the entire student community of IIT Kharagpur. With more than 30 faculty members, several post-doctoral researchers and around 100 research scholars, the department has a very vibrant research environment. The areas of research interests and expertise spans a wide range including Astrophysics and Cosmology, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Biophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Non-linear Dynamics and Hydrodynamics, Nuclear and High-energy Physics, Optics and Photonics, Statistical Physics etc. covering both theoretical and experimental aspects. Petroleum Engineering


This academic program is aimed at the industrial needs of specialized competency and comparative lack of opportunities for such courses in Indian technical institutions. The program will also facilitate the need for competent manpower for the global petroleum exploration and production industry. Through this program IIT Kharagpur will develop a state of the art research and development facilities for various aspects of Petroleum Engineering leveraging the availability of interdisciplinary expertise available at IIT Kharagpur from its various academic units. The program will also minimize the existing gap of higher education and academic research in the field of oil and gas engineering in India through appropriate faculty training and induction of young engineers into quality research.

The program would also give exposure to global industrial practices and work environments in the form of internships of adequate duration. Towards this attempt would be made to involve national and international industry such as: Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, ONGC, Total etc. Additionally there will be exposure to R&D programs of international institutions in the area such as : Texas A&M, University of Texas, Austin, University of Oklahoma etc. This would be achieved through collaborative research programs among faculty as well through M. Tech Projects etc.

School of Quality and Reliability


School on Quality and Reliability (Q&R), named after Renowned Quality Expert and distinguished alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Subir Chowdhury is first of its kind in Asia. Reliability Engineering Center which is one of the pioneer in the field of Reliability in India from past 33 years is now venturing in the field of Quality with an aim to improve the trinity of Process, Planet and People (3P’s) targeting Engineering systems, natural systems and human systems. The School is truly an inter-disciplinary centre wherein faculty members as well as students from various disciplines comes together. Apart from traditional curriculum, the school also has a holistic view on Q&R by including various application domains of the 3P’s.
